1860's red and green applique

Recent posts by Kathie, Taryn and Donna on red and green applique and Baltimore applique have prompted me to share a treasured old piece.

It measures 74cm square (about 30") and is hand sewn with white thread.  There is quite a lot of staining on the background muslin, however I'm undecided about washing it.

I've collected several red/green/cheddar applique and pieced blocks, thinking to one-day combine them Paul Pilgrim style into a "blended" quilt, but haven't worked up the courage as yet!

Miss Empty Field has just left for the beach and taken every digital camera in the house with her, so I'll have to photograph the other blocks for another post.

"Beach" you exclaim! Yes... Spring has delivered a second glorious 27C day here in Sydney, yesterday I took another few shots around my garden.

  My favourite... Hellebores.

Dogwood - not really suited to Sydney but it gets a great deal of care!

Afternoon sun on the Clivea.

Until next time...happy sewing.

There may be stains on the background but the colours are pristine and clear! Lovely block.

I have always heard it's best to quilt the piece and then wash it. But if you soaked it and were gentle? My concern would be the red running. It's a fabulous block. I can't wait to see what you end up with from your lone star blocks, that is an amazing amount of work.

I can see this being made into a 4 block applique quilt in red and green solid fabrics.

It's a wonderful block. I've never done princess feather applique, but this pattern is so appealing that I really want to try. I love how the wavy feather shape is repeated in the center and the flowers, and look at those teeny tiny stitches -- I love it.

What a great block! I'm thinking it would look lovely framed just by itself. Thanks for showing us.

I love this block! I did my very first applique with white thread. I actually enjoyed working with the contrasting color thread because it was easy to see the stitches.
Gorgeous block and lovely blooms!
Happy Spring!

What a wonderful block! I would use Restoration Wash or All Free Clear if you are going to wash it, and use a color catcher sheet in case it bleeds. How fun trying to decide how to use it.

That is a great block. I actually like it the way it is. It has character. But it would be neat to see if you decide to wash it.

Love, love your block. I don't think I've ever seen this one quite this way - thanks for sharing it. Have you considered an oxyclean soak. It can work wonders and is gentle.

Your red and green fabrics are still so vibrant and strong I bet it has never been washed. I wouldn't do it because you risk the green losing pigment. Thanks for the photo. I've been waffling about whether I should use strong colors in my repro. Looks that is what they used!
