holiday ramblings

Season's Greetings! I hope your Christmas was happy and filled with peace, love and joy. Mine was also filled with a little too much dessert and champagne...so consequently the runners are being laced back on and I'm hitting the pavement everyday to try to work it off!!

So what's new? I've been distracted this holiday period by madder brown, copper and cinnamon....

I love star quilts!
These hexagon stars are made with 60 degree diamond papers and have completely taken over my attentions - I'm hooked. Inspired by a wonderful quilt top circa 1870 sold recently on eBay, I decided against purchasing and instead started covering paper diamonds.

I love how the tumbling blocks start appearing once the medium backgrounds kick in against the shirtings. The major challenge for me is to be random - the original quilt  top is very scrappy and although the colour scheme is controlled the fabric associations witin the stars are not planned.
Progress so far...still many more stars to make but they are so fun!

Over the holidays we've had some lovely visitors. One of the great things about living where I do, so close to a large bush reserve, is we are often visited by native birds. This month the Tawny Frogmouths have returned. Here's mum pretending to be a branch.
She's brought her three babies - they are as big as she is but haven't learned the proper camoflage techniques yet.

On Christmas Eve we were entertained by some young Corellas - carrying on like brats, squawking and playing the fool. As soon as they saw me with the camera they started posing - flapping wings and trying to hang upside down...
Here's my Pineapple Lily, it's flowered without being too horribly shredded by the little green caterpillars this year.

Thank you to all for your friendship throughout 2012. I have loved reading your blog posts and your comments on mine - here's to a great year that's past and for a fabulous 2013....

Wow! Wonderful photos of the tawny frogmouths, they are beautiful birds. I've not heard of the pineapple Lilly before but I love it and I really really love your hexagon stars. Looking forward to watching that one grow.

Wishing you and your family a happy, safe and prosperous new year.

Beautiful stars, love the subtle browns. Great shots of the birds...hope you have a Happy New Year!

Your stars are fabulous! I find that "random" thing hard too. I can never manage to make things random the same as in antique quilts. I try too hard to make things look evenly random when that's not really how antique quilts look. I think you've captured the look beautifully.
The bird photos are so interesting.

Beautiful paper pieced stars! Lovely fabric choices there too. Bit of a coincidence: - I made a gift quilt earlier this year with same block and paper pieced too - but forming all tumbling blocks. It certainly was addictive, as you say, and I loved the way the blocks 'floated' across the quilt top.
Have fun and Happy New Year!

Just love your new project. I have just picked up an old UFO. Making tumbling blocks, also inspired by an antique quilt.

Love the fabrics in your newest project. I have a tumbling blocks top from that time period that I found years ago in Lowell, Mass...very graphic!

I love your new project as I have always been drawn to these colors. I tried the link for several days on the origin of inspiration, and am not able to make it work - is it possible to check the link or post the photo? It's a neat thing to see those tumbling blocks come forth :)

Happy New Year. I could not find the photo of the antique on the link. I did post a few close ups of an antique quilt I own. Madder & brown with a couple of accent colors for you to enjoy. In your madder madness. :)I had you on my mind. I do hope you have fun with your newest creation.

I do enjoy following your blog.

Your paper pieced hexie stars are beautiful, such wonderful colours! Tawny frog mouth owls are so wonderful, how special to see little chicks! I'm impressed by your photos, by the time I get my camera out the birds have gone.
